You must pay this fee within the time frame required on the Invoice issued to you by the Attorney-General’s Department – or you will be automatically de-authorised.
- To be re-authorised requires $600 application fee, and meeting current training and other appointment requirements.
The Attorney-General’s Department has no discretion on this matter unless you apply for an exemption on the charges – cost $30 – only two grounds applicable – Relevant extracts:

Specified circumstances exemption
Specified circumstances exemptions are to assist marriage celebrants to remain registered when they need to take a substantial period of ‘time out’ due to their personal circumstances. Examples may include serious illness or caring responsibilities or long-term absence from Australia.

Remoteness exemption
Exemptions will also be available for celebrants living in remote areas to assist remote communities maintain access to a civil celebrant service.
- If you are granted an exemption, you may still be required to meet your OPD obligations, despite being exempt from the annual registration charge. If you are granted an exemption, you will remain registered and be able to solemnise marriages during the exempted period.
- Exemptions will not be granted on the basis of financial hardship.
