Coalition of Celebrant Associations

Australia’s Peak Celebrant Body

CoCA association representatives specific recommendations

CoCA association representatives specific recommendations are that:
  1. The Qualification be determined as a Diploma level qualification

  2. The AGD change the Regulations to "Competency Units as required by the Attorney-General"

  3. The AGD choose a portion of the qualification approximately equivalent in time and cost to a Certificate IV in Celebrancy

  4. The Qualification have the following Diploma level rather that Cert IV units on these topics:
CHCLEG003 Manage legal and ethical compliance
CHCCS426B Provide support and care relating to loss and grief

Note: Our CoCA associations predicted that future celebrants will expand their services related to loss and grief to move beyond providing just funerals, and will need to be more informed, promote their services and adapt to the changing needs/  of the baby boomer generation.

  5. The Funeral Industry Units are not appropriate to independent celebrants who work outside the employment framework of the Funeral Industry.

Therefore either new unit/s are needed to address this gap in training or more depth and breath is needed in the existing units that will effectively train celebrants to "Plan, provide and review a range of celebrancy services related to loss and grief"

  6. The qualification's performance and assessment evidence ensure in-depth training for:
    • Researching, creating and evaluating ceremonial elements
    • Using writing skills for celebrancy practice
    • Developing presentation and performance skills for celebrancy

  7.
The assessment conditions ensure that trainees are required to use a range of web, IT based and newer technologies to ensure that they will be capable delivering a sustainable viable professional celebrancy practice upon graduation, if they so choose.

  8. The Training Providers ensure that there are many opportunities within their assessment tasks for trainees to design, perform and evaluate a range of ceremonies, including several that are  real occasions, as  this industry has limited opportunities for placements and traineeships, and celebrants are offering once-in-a-life time events.
Within a Diploma level course, participants could be asked at the beginning of the course to negotiate a real occasion with family members and/or friends who would be willing to provide the trainee with an opportunity to work with real clients.
